UNEMPLOYMENT  is a perennial problem in Sabah as it is anywhere else. To address this, the state government, spearheaded by the Ministry of Resource Development and Information Technology, holds an annual job expo to disseminate information on the various job opportunities in the state.

Speaking to reporters at a press conference at Wisma Bandaraya today, the Minister of Resource Development and Information Technology Datuk Dr. Yee Moh Chai, said that the annual job expo offers an avenue for employers to find suitable employees and the latter to find jobs that suit their requirements.

According to Ministerial sources, 42 companies from various industries including the hospitality industry, the agriculture industry and the fisheries industry will offer a combined number of approximately 2,500 jobs at this year's job expo.

When asked about the effectiveness of such an expo, Dr. Yee said that there is no statistical analysis  to prove the effectiveness or otherwise of the expo, but the Ministry has received positive feedback from the public since the job expo was first held in 2007.

"We have an overwhelming request to hold the expo again especially from organizations that represent interest groups like the trade unions and the Federation of Manufacturers who know from first hand experience that the expo has been most helpful to both employers and jobseekers.

"The whole idea of the job expo is to ensure that through it the employers will find the employees they look for and vice versa for the job seekers. I am sure everyone will gain at the end of the expo," Dr. Yee said.

The 2-day expo will be held this Friday at Suria Sabah Shopping Mall, Kota Kinabalu. - Insight Sabah
